These two writers were as different as Burgundy from Scotch. On one hand, Sir Walter Scott was a genius of a gentleman who literally invented the historical novel and wrote out of raw knowledge and rich learning in the romantic past of Scotland. Alexander Dumas on the other hand, was a brilliant newcomer who wrote with a unique style and personality. Both these men were master storytellers and both turned out such staggering amounts of work that makes the most hardworking of all modern writers seem like sluggish fools in comparison. Scott and Dumas were the first real heroes of history’s earliest mass reading public – they created what you would call today: bestsellers!

Since then, the art of writing bestsellers has changed. There are scores of authors who want to write novels and most of them would love to write a bestseller. Yes, writing a bestseller can change your life for good. From financial success to being emotionally rewarding, writing a bestseller can boost your confidence, renew your self-esteem and refurbish your bank account as well! What’s more, writing bestsellers can give you tremendous credibility in the eyes of strangers.

Yes, at one time or another, every single businessman or woman must have flirted with the idea of writing a book. It isn’t a very bad thought – that is if you have a great deal of original content that sends forth a compelling message. If you’re willing to work hard, then your dreams of creating that super selling bestseller might just come true. Now, before you start dreaming of your book being in The New York Times bestseller list, you should consider checking up on the publishing industry first.

There are two main reasons why everyone wants to create a best selling book and why a bestseller can benefit each and every one of us, which are:

• Writing a best selling book is one of the best ways to gain recognition and at the same time make money. If you’re one of those people who want to share a message and make a difference in the world, then you should probably consider writing a bestseller. The way your book sells can either make or break your brand, your business and even your image. There are millionaires and even billionaires who are still writing books because they know the power of creating bestsellers. From Donald Trump to Richard Branson to even JK Rowling, bestsellers are indeed a powerful tool. What’s more, having your own best-selling book will give you endless opportunities for free advertising and exposure. Since advertising costs a lot of money, this is by and large one of the greatest benefits of having a bestseller to your name.

• Another good reason for creating a bestseller is that it gives you leverage. Once you have the right kind of leverage, you will be able to make the most money and it’s all because you have a bestseller to your name. There are 6 main types of advertising media, namely the Internet, TV, Radio, Magazines, Newspapers and word-of-mouth. Once your book makes it in the bestseller list, free publicity and exposure will automatically come to you.

Writing a bestseller can require immense talent if you try to do it the old-fashioned way. Luckily, now there are much faster and easier ways. I’ve taught people to start and finish books in as little as 9 days. So it’s NOT hard when they learn my methods.

#1: I don’t advise going with a publisher at all. Self-publishing is faster, gives you more control, and you get to keep more of the profits from your efforts.

#2: Using my system, a less than ‘perfect’ book can still become a best-seller. A book doesn’t have to be a literary masterpiece to still give good value to people.

However, one thing is for certain – the publisher with the most talent will always do the best. So, how does one go about creating a bestseller? Although there isn’t any magical solution to ensure creating a bestseller, there is a common denominator. It is the ability to come up with a good strategy and implement it and to orchestrate teamwork. Regardless of the budget, the strategy, the publisher or even the book, all these ingredients need to be orchestrated in order to work together. The real talent lies in the publisher’s ability to make all these factors function simultaneously. It’s not hard when you know the secrets.

You should have both classic and contemporary best selling authors in your list—from Charles Dickens and Mark Twain to Mario Puzo and J.K Rowling. Make sure that you include the name of the author as your keyword so that online buyers can easily search for it.

One good thing about selling books online is that you can target almost all kinds of readers. You can sell romance books to women and girls, textbooks to students, business books to employees, western and science fiction books to men and boys, and children’s books to youngsters. A wider market means more potential buyers. And more potential buyers mean more income.

You can sell used books from your own bookshelf or from your friends’. You can drive around town and search for thrift shops or yard sales that sell books. You can buy old used books for a fraction of their original price and you can resell them with higher prices. You can even get them for free from your own book collection. If you want to sell brand new books, make sure that you find a book supplier that can give you reasonable wholesale book prices.

Seven Success Secrets to be Better at Everything

I have never met someone who didn’t want to be successful at something. It’s fair to say we all want to be successful. Here are some tips I’ve learned over the years that have helped me stay on track and move toward my dreams.

1. Do the Right Things Every Day.

The best way to accomplish anything is to put the power of action and time to work for you. Just like interest accruing on an investment, when you invest the right actions on a daily basis, you accomplish your goal much faster.

So, whatever you’re doing, figure out the actions you need to take on a regular basis to accomplish your goals. Then do those every day, every week, every month, whatever it takes to get it done.

2. Be Good to Yourself.

Being successful in business, as in life, takes energy and work. And it’s a lot harder when you’re tired, stressed out or otherwise in poor health. So, set yourself up for a win by taking care of yourself. Keep your body and mind well-tuned and in good shape so you have the physical and mental energy to be all that you can be.

We’re all different so we all have things that help us stay healthy and balance. Find what works for you and do them on a daily basis.

3. Keep Swinging the bat.

Being in Minnesota, I was a fan of Kirby Puckett when he played for the Twins. Kirby was well known for being a consistently good hitter. A reporter once asked him what his secret was. He said it was simple. He swung the bat as often as possible. Every opportunity he got, he’d swing at pitches. He said the more he’d swing, the more he’d hit.

The more times you try, the more opportunities you have to succeed. And, the more you do something, the better you get at doing it. So, your success rate will probably increase.

4. Read the Signs.

We all get busy. Our personal and business lives are full to the brim with things to occupy our time and mental space. So, it’s easy to zip through life and miss things.

Like signs.

The world is constantly telling us things. Whether we believe it or are even aware of it, we have signs all around us, guiding us.

I think of the movie, L.A. Story (1991) starring Steve Martin. While trying to find meaning in his life, Steve Martin’s character discovers the highway signs in Los Angeles are sending him messages. (They’re written in plain English so it’s hard to miss them.) In time, he learns to pay attention to his signs and his life becomes more purposeful and less chaotic.

The older I get the more I realize the importance of reading the signs the world gives us. Maybe this is because I’ve gotten better at reading them and I’ve seen the impact on my life.

When several independent things happen in my life that point in the same direction, I take that as a sign. When I try to avoid or ignore something and it keeps coming back, I see that as a sign. When I keep making the same mistake over and over and then someone or something helps me pull my head out of the sand so I see the error of my ways,

I take that as a sign.

The more you learn to read your signs, the better you will be at making the right decisions in your life.

5. Manage Inputs and Monitor Outcomes.

Since we cannot control outcomes why spend much time worrying about them? Sure we need to monitor them but that’s all. Don’t spend a lot of time trying to control something you can’t (like outcomes.)

Instead, focus on the inputs or the actions that will lead to the outcome you desire. Manage that well and you’ll see the outcome you want.

6. Don’t Try to be Perfect.

I’m always amazed at how many of us fall into the perfection trap. We can’t start something until we think we have the whole thing planned out. Or we don’t finish things until they’re done to our level of perfection. I’ve done both, more than I care to admit.

Striving for quality is great. So is meeting standards. But we should never strive so much for perfection that we lose sight of our goal. That is wasteful.

Nobody is perfect. Nothing is perfect. It’s simple human arrogance to assume we can achieve perfection. It’s just not possible. So, get over it. Set your standards to a level that is appropriate to your goals and resources. Then get it done!

7. Know Yourself.

In 2002, Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton published a best-selling business book called Now, Discover Your Strengths. In it, they espouse the strategy of managing better by understanding people’s strengths and enhancing them.

This is good advice.

We accomplish more if we use our strengths. Our strengths and our talents make us unique. They give us abilities to do certain things very well. As such, they help define who we are and what we should spend our time doing.

We will be more successful at things we do well than at things we do not do well.

The more we know ourselves, the better we can understand our individual and unique talents. This helps us focus on what we do well.

Becoming Proficient in a Set of Fundamental Business Skills is a Must for Success!

To develop a small business into a successful enterprise demands more than the passion that you may have for your business.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, facts speak for themselves!  Over half of new businesses fail because the entrepreneur is unable to translate his passion into practical business skills.  Running a small business requires that you become a “jack-of-all-skills.”  

Having solid business strategies are valuable, but without a set of fundamental business skills to implement them, the strategies remain dormant.  It is important to assess the skills that you have, the skills that you will need to learn, or simply the skills that you will need to improve.

Success in your business demands more than hard work, expertise in your field, and resilience.  Success demands the use of fundamental business skills:  General Management Skills, Analytical Skills, Financial Skills, Communication Skills, Sales and Marketing Skills, and Strategic Planning Skills.

No one is more determined to reveal the secrets of business success than Jim Collins.  Jim Collins is the author of two best-selling business books–Built to Last and Good to Great.  Both of his highly acclaimed books address the question: Why do some companies become great, while others flounder?  Bo Burlingham, an editor-at-large of Inc. Magazine, recently interviewed Mr. Collins.  I found his article to be very interesting.  Here is just a snippet of the article.

Bo asks Mr. Collins, “Have you noticed any significant change/changes in the business of building great companies over the last 30 years?  Jim Collins replied, “I would say that the basic principles of building a company have remained the same to a great degree, but it’s the skills that are always changing!  The skills . . .  You need to be continually learning new skills.”  

There is a great need for a wide range of business skills because each task requires a different skill.  For instance, the skills  that you need to hatch a business concept, identify a market, develop a product or service, or assemble the resources and operations to bring it to market are not the same skills that you need “to shepherd” a company into the future.  That’s why it is important to first assess your skills so that you can accurately identify the voids in your skill set, and then take the necessary steps to fill those voids and improve your critical business skill set.  Your goal should be “to get to the top of your game,” or “to remain at the top of your game,”, or both!

It is highly unlikely or unrealistic for one business owner to have all of the necessary skills to effectively manage and control a business.  A business owner may be proficient in several of the required disciplines—sales, marketing, management, organizational control, financials, logistics—but may not be proficient in all of the disciplines.  The business owner must now develop a proactive approach by surrounding himself with individuals who have greater expertise in the areas where he lacks experience or “know how.”

Michael Dell, the founder of Dell Computer, is a good example of a business owner who realized his own shortcomings in certain areas.  Mr. Dell has said, on more than one occasion, that he realized early on in his career that he needed to surround himself with a strong management team, a team whose members had the skills and experience that he lacked.  The success of Michael Dell and his company, Dell Computer, speaks for itself…

how-to information, and has produced a whole series
of “Dummies” books around the market. Further, there

how-to phenomenon.

You could convert money by creating ebooks on any or all
subjects roofed in any of those series. Go to

Harvest one you like, and start full speed ahead!

Remember that even though the books hold “Dummies”
in the title, that the books are as fashionable as they
are because the readers are not treated like dummies
at all. The authors guide a person who wants to
find out the easiest way to do something without
too much lateral discussion. When you have your
ebook written and when you decide a title, make sure
you are appealing to a reader’s smarts! If you use
words like silly, dumb, or hopeless in the title,
make sure and clear that the meaning would not extend to
insulting the specific reader.

Ebooks, because of their brevity and because they
are marketed primarily on the Internet can target
less significant readers. You don’t have to put in writing a universal
book like “How to use a computer” (which may not be
interesting enough to sell anyway in this decade).
Ebooks can contain more specific territory. Knowing
this, you can

* produce your ebook in a specific way for a specific
niche readership, and
* establish additional ebooks for different facets of the
same area of interest, and sell each one separately!

Say you’ve decided to write an ebook on fishing.
(FYI, this is one of those hobbies where enthusiasts
are willing to spend money!). You could design
“How to Catch Freshwater Trout,” “How to Tie Your
Own Flies,” or “How to Plan a Winning Deep Sea
Fishing Trip.” Almost anything related to the
hobby can become a distinct ebook depending on
how much detail you add in. Clearly, “How to put
on waders” maybe wouldn’t be a great choice
(though some would say it’s impossible to under estimate
today’s consumer), because you could have to strain to
fill up 60 to 100 pages on such a uncomplicated topic. You get
the idea. The topic would need to be, in most cases,
book valuable. Use good wisdom.

Then, life itself requires instructions, as we know
from “Life’s Little Instruction Book.” So, life also
qualifies as a good how-to book topic. There are numerous
sub topics, and you’ll never run out of ideas. Here are a
few examples:

•”How to ensure your child gets an A+ in math”

•”How to have a successful garage sale”

•”How to arrange your home office”

And while we’re on the subject of how-to books, I’d
like to make one quick point. The titles of these
ebooks do not need to be incredibly intellectual. Be sure
the words “How to” are the first part of the title,
and the rest should tell exactly what the ebook is about.
For example, which of these three titles would be best?

1.”How to have a successful garage sale.”

2.”One weekend away from a cleaner house”

3.”How to sell your old shoes for a profit”

Although numbers 2 and 3 are clever, a little
punchy, and correspond with the ebook subject matter,
I would still recommend using title number 1.
“How to have a successful garage sale” summarizes
it up pretty well and will catch the eye of
an Internet searcher who is interested in putting
together a garage sale and desires a how-to manual.
Anyway, back to the point. Any stage of life,
way of coping with life, or large or small thing
about life can be the area of interest of a how-to book.

Looking young

Perhaps sixteen year old girls don’t want to look
younger, but from that point on, and for most of
the population in Western society, looking young
is a mutual desire. Everybody requests to find the
fountain of youth, whether it be in a pill container,
a special diet, operation, or an ebook.

An ebook about staying or appearing young in the
face of growing old will have a solid future. Here
are some title ideas, and I’m sure you can come up
with a truckload more.

•”Drop ten years and ten pounds in ten days”

•”How to look 28 forever”

•”100 ways to look younger”

•”Grocery store products that will help you look younger”

•”Look 30 again not including surgery”

•”How to live to be 100″

This topic is red hot. Botox, esthetic operation, chemical peels,
lasers, diets, acupuncture, electronic pulses, mega
vitamins, prescription teas, thigh cream, and teeth
whitener are being purchased by baby boomers, the
elderly, and even women as young as age 20 ! No one wants
to look a day older than they have to.

Health

Health is a worry to anybody who is growing old or
sick or faced illness with a loved one or desires more
energy or, fundamentally, everybody. Health ebooks are a
good investment for you to produce. And doctors don’t
have to be the authors. Anyone with any qualifications,
or no credentials at all, can put in writing books on health.
Just be sure you don’t claim to be a doctor if you’re
not one.

Here are some health topics you can attain at this moment
in time and be almost guaranteed burning interest,
readership, and sales!

Disease prevention and therapy. As our baby boomer population
ages, most will be afflicted with heart disease, cancer,
diabetes, dementia, or some other difficulty. Give these
people some hope. Create an ebook on how to handle, how
to find the best practitioners, how to avoid disease
triggers, or cures American doctors are unaware of.

Natural remedies. People are curious about alternatives

there’s obesity, general health, and also diet supplements
like vitamins. Think “How to equip your kitchen for
macrobiotic dieting.” Or, “Eat to cure cancer.”

Travel

Never has so much travel been available to so many.
People today would like to get in touch with the people they
love. They want to go through different parts of the
world. See exotic things. Be entertained. Also, because,
especially in America, adults from time to time work well more
than 40 hours a week, people want really good holidays.
They’re doing their research to make sure that they
will really enjoy their valuable few weeks off each year.

Here are some topics for you: how to trade frequent
flyer miles, how to keep airport security off your
back, how to travel on a dime and get change, and
how to keep your children in high spirits on long car trips.

Beyond the how-to’s, there is plenty of room for books
like, the best entertainment parks for your money, top 100
camp grounds, things you must observe and do in Utah before
you die, and free things to do when visiting Washington, D.C.
Get the idea? The good thing about creating travel
ebooks is that you may already know a lot about a
place that other people may be interested in visiting.

Money

Money makes the world go around (well that and the earth’s
axis and driving forces), and so it would make sense that
ebooks would abound on the topic of money. They do, but the
market is nowhere near drenched. There’s always opportunity for
more. From getting wealthy to just saving money day-to-day,
people are until the end of time interested in how-to books related to
money. Ideas below:

•”How to feed your family on less than a week”

•”How to get free stuff”

•”How to pay almost no taxes”

•”How to buy a retirement home for no money down”

•”How to be richer than your parents”

•”How to buy cars at auction”

•”How to start a financial management business”

Life enhancement

In these days, although less and fewer are attending
churches, more and more are flocking to obtain self-help
books. Self-help books are leaping off shelves at brick
and mortar book stores. People want to feel that if they
read a self-help book, they take all the capacity to change
their lives. Whether or not this is real is moot. Changing
your life, soul searching, and helping thyself, are all
great ebook topics.

As much as ever before, people want to know how to find
peace with their pasts, how to be creative or spiritual
in a consuming society, and how to find true love. There
is no end to how-to books you could create in the category

Even as the economy takes a tumble, the popularity of online games is on the rise. Online game properties continue to see positive growth as Americans turn to ad-supported games as a form of affordable escapism.

Nearly 86-million Americans visited online game sites in December 2008, a 27 percent increase over the previous year, reports comScore, Inc., a leader in measuring the digital world. While these numbers are astonishing on their own, comScore also reports that the total time spent playing online games increased by 42 percent.

This means more people are playing online games and they’re playing for much longer periods of time. In fact, a survey conducted by Slingo Inc., a thought-leader in the casual games industry, reveals that nearly half of all visitors to the Slingo.com portal play casual games seven days per week.

What does this mean for advertisers? In spite of the recession, online game sites are among the stickiest entertainment sites on the Web. By tapping into this highly engaged audience, advertisers can connect with consumers more easily than in other advertising platforms where the message is often tuned out.

Affordable, Escapist Fun

So why are online games more appealing than ever during an economic downturn? In part, it’s because many people enjoy online games as an escape from the pressures they may experience at work or in the home.

“By concentrating and focusing on the game, a person can take a ‘mental vacation’ from whatever it is at the moment that is causing stress in his or her life,” says Dr. Carl Arinoldo, a stress and relaxation psychologist, in an interview with the Long Island Exchange. “And, given the engrossing quality of these games, the concentration and focusing are quite easy to accomplish and stick with!” Despite the influx of bad economic news, online games continue to serve as digital stress busters.

In addition, as people feel the financial crunch and being to tighten their purse strings, the entertainment budget is among the first things to go. “Not only have consumers turned to outlets such as gaming to take their minds off the economy, but as they curtail their discretionary gaming-related purchases they are turning to free alternatives,” said Edward Hunter, comScore director of gaming solutions, regarding the usage of free online game sites. Since most ad-supported online games are free to play, people can have guilt-free fun in the comfort of their own homes.

Economic Bright-Spot

While the economic picture for most industries is grim leading into 2009, the outlook is bright for the online gaming industry which continues to benefit from growth in its display advertising business model. More than 8.6-billion display ads were placed on online game portals in November 2008, reports comScore, for a 29 percent increase over the previous year. Combined with the surge in the number of people visiting online gaming sites and the increased time spent playing online games, this has resulted in a 30 percent increase in the number of unique display ad exposures.

While the average person’s frequency of exposure to display ads remained constant, the number of display ads per page view dropped by 17 percent versus the previous year. This means that visitors to online game sites were exposed to approximately the same number of ads as before, but there was less ad clutter so each message had greater impact.

Additionally, the model of combining video ad content with casual game content promises to leverage the true value of casual games: user engagement. People are more willing to watch video ads that run before a game starts or between game levels, as opposed to video ads that appear in front of other video content. With online games, the payoff is big enough that viewers are willing to wait and, more importantly, to watch. In fact, according to leading online video advertising network SpotXchange, in February 2008, over 90% of the InGame video advertisements they served were watched in full. This level of engagement means the effectiveness of the video ad goes through the roof.

As greater numbers of people flock to their favorite ad-supported online games for budget-friendly entertainment, more advertisers are seeking the opportunity to reach this highly engaged audience. The increased revenue from display and video ads enables the online game portals to reduce ad clutter, providing a better visitor experience and offering advertisers a greater ROI. In the end, it’s a win-win-win situation for the advertisers, the game players, and the online game portals.
