"Ma parole, il va encore nous faire un bibe celui-là !" s’exclame Gilbert tandis que la boule roule lentement vers son but. Comme si elle prenait un malin plaisir à retarder le moment fatidique où elle viendra se coller au cochonnet. "Et voilà le biberon (1), je te dis qu’il a encore soif ce petit." Fin d’après-midi tranquille sous des platanes Val-de-marnais. Des clameurs ponctuées de claquements métalliques montent de petits groupes d’étranges bonshommes, bras pendants le long du corps terminés par deux ou trois morceaux de métal polis qui renvoient les éclats d’un soleil presque méditerranéen. Pas besoin de vivre à La Ciotat pour pratiquer la Pétanque. Ce sport chaleureux a ses adeptes dans n’importe quelle ville de notre département. "Tu vois, même les gensses du Nord s’y sont mis, avoue Lucien, mais si j’étais pas là ils se feraient mettre minable tous les étés," lance-t-il bien fort en attendant les signes de reconnaissance de ses copains. Une belle brochette de "méditerranéens" originaires de Belgique, d’Alsace, de Bretagne ou parigots pur sucre. Il y a déjà belle lurette que la Pétanque a perdu sa suprématie sur les terrains des pays d’Oc (même si les équipes du Sud restent parmi les meilleurs en compétition). La Pétanque est née dans les années 1900, sous le nom de Jeu Provençal puis de "Pés tanqués" en patois, c’est à dire "pieds joints". C’est dans la région de Lyon que naît en 1850 le premier véritable club sportif de "Lyonnaise". Apparaît ensuite la Fédération Lyonnaise et Régionale en 1906. Mais c’est surtout la "longue" provençale, la Pétanque, qui gagnera tous les terrains plus au Nord et finalement du monde entier (elle est obligatoire dans l’armée Thaïlandaise !).
Un jeu tellement populaire que des scènes entières restent gravées à jamais dans nos mémoires. Comme dans celle de l’écrivain Philippe Delerm (2) : "On ne joue pas à la Pétanque, mais aux boules : pour un têtard-surprise, un carreau stupéfiant, combien d’approches molles à un mètre du cochonnet, de tirs kamikazes enlevant la boule qu’on ne visait pas ! Il n’empêche. On a ce bruit de fête, ce bruit d’été des boules claires entrechoquées…"
Sur le terrain, il faut faire ses preuves avant de faire le mariolle. Et surtout ne pas venir rompre, la bonne humeur, la complicité qui règne entre les joueurs même si les engueulades sont aussi fréquentes ici qu’ailleurs. La contestation du point est parfois l’un des rituels les plus spectaculaires d’une partie. Chacun sort de sa poche le petit mètre à ruban, l’antenne télescopique, la ficelle étalon ou tout autre objet vaguement rectiligne qui garantira la mesure exacte entre les boules et le "bouchon". Marc Bonheur, de l’US Alfortville et arbitre de la fédération à l’habitude de régler les litiges : "En compétition, l’arbitre n’intervient qu’à la demande des équipes. J’utilise alors la tirette ou le compas si les boules sont à moins de 10 cm du bouchon voire des cales de mécanique si les boules sont au millimètre." Pour Pascal, un pilier des boulodromes, "c’est surtout une occasion de "tchatcher". Tous les arguments sont bons pour la bande de tricheurs de mauvaise foi que tu vois là. Il y en a même qui vont te dire que le soleil fait dilater ton mètre en métal ou d’autres balivernes. En fait on rigole bien, et on se fiche un peu de perdre ou pas, même si on fait les malins, ça fait partie du jeu." "Tout cela est une sorte de folklore qui nous aide à gommer nos différences, ajoute Patrick. On n’est pas toujours d’accord sur tout, mais on laisse couler le temps quand le ton monte un peu trop." Pierre Despalles, directeur sportif de la Fsgt 94 (2 titres de champion de France) confirme : " C’est souvent sur des sujets de politique qu’il y a des querelles, mais ce n’est jamais méchant. On se pardonne facilement les écarts et la pétanque est en fait une bonne école de tolérance." D’ailleurs les boulistes se chamaillent souvent aussi entre coéquipiers. Pour savoir par exemple, quelle tactique employer. "Si je tire à la raspaille ou au fer, si je te fais un Palet ou un Rétro. Au final, on se retrouve fromager (3) et tout le monde se marre !" Marcel Pagnol voyait aussi dans le jeu de boule cette petite graine d’humanisme : "Il nous reste la fierté d’avoir inventé ce jeu pacifique, qui en faisant le tour du monde, travaille modestement, mais sûrement, pour le rapprochement des peuples, c’est-à-dire pour la Paix."

Question by MICHAELA <3s GOD!: Dance is my only “sport”?
So I’m in middle school. I’m also in a traveling performing arts dance company. I have a minimum of 6 hours of hard practice and whatnot every week, but eventually it will be way more. I’m also the president of my school’s FBLA. (Future Business Leaders of America) Most of my friends play many sports, particularly for the school’s teams. When people ask me what sports I play, all I can say is dance. Sometimes I feel like this isn’t enough and they don’t understand how physically demanding it is to be a dancer, especially to my extent. I just want to make sure I’m doing enough for my age compared to others.

Dance is a lot more work than a lot of sports. You are perfectly fine! I’m in high school and all I do is dance too. & its way cooler than soccer :) Plus you don’t want to overwork yourself. If you love to dance, that’s all that matters. And you’re getting plenty of exorcise!
