The Bare Bones Basics of Viral Information Product Marketing on Ebay

The internet has an amazing capacity for marketing products. With literally millions of people accessing it, the world is virtually at your fingertips. With that being said, most people come to the internet in search of one thing: information. For this reason, writing and marketing a viral information product, like an ebook or a CD, is a great way to benefit financially from people’s desire to learn and stay informed.

A viral information product is a simple, 10-20 page digital book or a home-produced CD or DVD, that you use to market yourself, your ideas and other products. By selling at a loss or giving away the information product and offering others the rights to do the same, you can expand your contact base exponentially. If you give your product to 10 people, who in turn give it to 10 people, you have expanded your influence to 100 people. That’s the beauty of viral information product marketing-you create multiple streams of income.

Producing a viral information product

Step 1 – Choose a topic that you are not only interested in demonstrating or writing about, but that you think others could benefit from the information. As an example, if you have a talent for gardening and you plan on building a compost bin this spring, document the entire process with photos, videos and text. Then simple compile your information into any format you like and, voila, you have your first information product!

Step 2 – Check the internet for interest on that particular topic. Use research that has already been done for you by investigating best-selling books on sites like Amazon or Chapters. Find their “how-to” sections and look for the hot topics. If those topics are selling, you already know there is a market. Any topic that teaches others how to make money, how to stop pain, learn a new skill or how to improve their lives can be very profitable. Marketing a viral eBook

Step 3 – Give the book away for free and allow others to do the same. But, include links within the book that link back to a website where you offer other items for sale. If you write an eBook on viral marketing, for example, and give it away for free but it has links to another book on “Top 20 topics for viral marketing” on your website that you sell for profit, many will read your free eBook and then follow the link for further information and purchase your for-profit book.

Step 4 – Sell the book for a minimal price and allow others to do the same. Selling ebooks on eBay is a great way to do this. Following the same rules in step #3, you will still lead your readers to other products that will result in further sales.

Step 5 – Provide opportunities for others to sell your higher priced items as an affiliate. If 10 affiliate sales people lead 10 people to purchase an eBook you are selling for and you are giving them a 50% cut for doing so, you will have an additional 100 people buying your book that you will make off of without having to find the buyers yourself. That is 00 and you didn’t do a thing!

Two items of caution:

Presenting ideas that are not valid as a quick way to make money may lead to a small payoff for you. However, bad press spreads quickly online. If what you are selling is not valid or worth the money, your name will be ruined along with possible

future sales. Make sure that when giving your eBook away, there is a caveat that states that users are not allowed to change the links. Doing so would defeat the purpose of your writing the book in the first place.

Self publishers need to have a good solid marketing plan to sell books and should be written well in advance of writing your book and in place a year prior to publishing your book. Make sure you know you have a market for your book before you write it. If you’ve written a ‘how to’ book you’ll find people are always seeking ‘how to’ information making your book easy to sell; in fact the most sought after items on the Internet are information products. Your book selling, book marketing, and book promotion planning should begin before the manuscript is completed.


Using press releases can be a very effective marketing tool if used properly. Make sure your press release spells out the ‘who, what, where, when, and why.’ Direct mail a press release to all the trade journals in your field over and over again, not just once; you can use the same release.


Your book press release should not be written as you would a sales letter or flier, it should be written for the editor and tell about your book in a factual way, no opinion or glowing remarks. Send out the same press release to the editor of your local daily newspaper every week until you are called for an interview or are written up. Invest in press release submitting software and set aside time every week to send out a press release online to the press directories.


Send out at least ten press releases to the print and broadcast media in your area every month. When picked up by wire services, a press release can easily end up generating hundreds of mentions for your book through syndication.


Contact non-bookstore booksellers and offer to leave books on consignment. Make five telephone calls a day that relate to marketing your book. When you get a nice write up or feature about you and/or your book, have it laminated and set it up on an easel at trade shows.


Book signings don’t sell many books for publishers and are often a waste of time; better to spend it elsewhere. Make sure to promote and market your book each and every day, both online and offline. Make sure not to overlook the Internet; get yourself interviewed or profiled for sites both about writing, publishing and about the topics covered in your book. Place free ads periodically for your book’s website on Craigslist in different categories to drive even more traffic to your website.


Local radio shows and television appearances are good but are often forgotten within hours of the broadcast; make sure to make or get a copy of any television broadcast for future promotions. I’ve seen publishers lose a lot of money paying for expensive display ads, so beware if you do this; I don’t advise it in the beginning — get your feet wet first so you know what you’re doing.


Women buy more books then men; see how you can fit your book into the women’s market. Find a non-exclusive distributor with a good reputation to carry your book for the book store trade, as well as for other retailers. Remember to make sure your book is listed in Books-in-Print; don’t assume it’s already listed.


Submit articles to online article directories that focus on your book’s topic to drive customers to your website. Arrange to speak at local, regional and national events that relate to your book topic; bring books along and have an associate sell them at the back of the room.


Build a web site that provides another avenue for ordering, a virtual online press kit and link exchanges with sites that relate to your topic. If your book solves a problem, focus on this in your marketing.

The success of any book marketing effort depends on a good book and just plain hard work; it’s been done many times before and you can do it too. You can market and promote your book on a shoestring budget; be careful about your marketing dollars.

The long standing question in book publishing is how would a publishing house survive and continue printing alternative materials without a decent profit-margin? Realistically, some Christian book publishers do not sell enough books to even compensate the cost of production. Then again, a down trend in selling your books must fuel an inquiry on the different aspects of your publishing business such as the content of the books, the marketing of such books, and if the advertising strategies really reach the target market.

For publishers who want to make more money in order to print more spiritually enhancing and motivating books, read this list of little known book publishing secrets.

1. Create memorable content or your books and use this to market your book

All best-selling books have magic in their pages. Even the simplest books with only black ink and minimalist book cover designs could spark magic with the words in between pages. Always remember that a good book is never enough. It must be good enough for a person to read it over and over again and still feel satisfied every time. Emphasize this distinctive feature of the books your company publishes.

2. Check on your advertising scheme

As said earlier, a book with low readership is a cue to check on marketing and advertising schemes. Probably, people never read enough announcements about the book. Is it present in Christian bookstores? Does the commercial bookstore carry it in their religious books corner? If not, then have the publishers tried to negotiate with the bookstore? If you do not believe in the traditional way of marketing and advertising, then turn to social media. The internet is a medium which can be used to promote your products for free.

3. Create a subscription for your books

Subscription services often offer cheaper rates compared to regular priced printed materials. While this marketing strategy is common among regularly produced printed materials such as magazines (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly), it is unlikely to find books that offer subscription rates. If your company publishes at least four books in a year, try offering subscription to your loyal readers and then show them how much they could save in a year. You can either do this or give the subscribers a free gift every year for the continuous subscription.

4. Try Multi-Level Marketing

Multi level marketing is the same with network marketing wherein people recruit other people to sell your products. It is a very effective way of selling books and other religious items because your customers will most likely be those of the same faith as you are. Therefore, Christians will be able to network with co-Christians and thus have a market for the printed materials that your publishing house offers.

These are just some of things that can be done in order to increase the marketability of Christian book and other related products. Combined with other marketing strategies and a very good book to sell, this will surely spell profits for the publishing house.

PAY PER CLICK ADVERTISING

Pay per click advertising. When this first came out, the prices were insane. Then the prices dropped like a rock and Google was just the best place to advertise. Then, Google got too big for its own shoes and we’re back to where we started. Keywords that used to cost 7 cents per click are now going for 40 cents to or more.

Okay, maybe for those of you who don’t know what pay per click advertising is, I should give a brief, but by no means a complete definition as pay per click can get very complicated.

Pay per click advertising is the method by which advertisers pay a particular search engine, such as Google, Yahoo, etc., a certain amount of money for each visitor that is sent to the advertiser’s website.

Please believe me, this is a VERY complicated process and the above “definition” doesn’t even scratch the surface.

The truth is, pay per click advertising is so involved that books have been written on the subject. Some of them are best selling books too. Unfortunately, all of those books are worthless when it comes to trying to explain how to use pay per click advertising. And trust me, if this book tried to do the same, it would be JUST as worthless.

Pay per click advertising rules change so often that there is just no way to keep up with the changes. A book written tomorrow is outdated in a month.

So, we’re going to take a different approach to pay per click advertising. Instead of trying to teach you every little thing about it, we’re going to give you a guideline of rules to follow that must NEVER be broken. If you do JUST this much, then the rest of it won’t matter. Why? Because regardless of what anyone tells you, pay per click advertising is very hard to make profitable these days. There are too many problems with it.

Here are the main problems.

1. Cost per click costs are unpredictable from one day to the next

2. Because of the problem of click fraud, too much of your costs are basically thrown in the trash.

3. Each search engine has a different setup which makes trying to teach you HOW to set up a campaign totally futile.

4. Most search engines have very little control options as far as WHO you want your ad to be seen by, such as ONLY English speaking people.

5. Most search engines require you to pay up front even before you get the clicks, at least for the first month or for so many clicks. For example, Miva makes you deposit up front, so you better make sure you get enough clicks to use it up or the money is thrown away. There are NO refunds.

These are the main problems. Believe me, there are more. My point is this. If you see any book teaching you HOW to beat pay per click, run for the hills because ultimately, very little of what’s in those books is going to make much difference…Not today.

But like I said, there are certain things you need to know that will at the very least save you money.

The most important thing is to take the selling price of your product, whatever it is, and figure out how much it is going to cost you to make 1 sale.

How do you do that? Simple.

If you’re selling a tested affiliate product (not your own product) then the industry average is 1 sale for every 100 clicks.

So, if your product sells for and you get a 50% commission on that sale, then your earning per sale is .50.

If it costs you 10 cents per click and you make 1 sale for every 100 clicks, then 100 clicks will cost you .00. That means your profit is .50.

However, if it costs you 30 cents per click to sell your product, then 100 clicks will cost you and you’ll actually LOSE .50 for every sale. So in that case, pay per click advertising doesn’t pay well enough to use it to promote your product.

So, the key to all this is to figure out what it’s going to cost you per click to advertise your product.

That is where this gets VERY involved.

Here are the basic things you need to know.

When selling ANY product using pay per click advertising, your results are all going to be based on the keywords you use. All bidding for position (where you land on the search engine page) is done by keywords.

For example. Let’s say you are selling a natural cure for acne. If it’s a product being sold that is made by another company in which you are an affiliate for, email the company and ask them what keywords you should be bidding on to sell their product. If you can’t get a hold of the company, don’t panic. The keywords will be listed in the source code of their HTML on their sales page. Just view this source code and see what keywords they’re using. These are the keywords you want to use when setting up your pay per click campaign.

To find out how much these keywords are going to cost you, you first want to decide what positions you want to land in on the search engine results page. And no, you DON’T want to be in position 1. Why? Because the freebie seekers will eat you alive. You want to fall between positions 7 and 12. Those are the BEST positions to fall in between to make the most sales for the least amount of money.

After you decide on the positions you want to fall in, you then have to figure out how much you’re going to have to spend per click to achieve those positions. This is trial and error.

What you do is go to the pay per click site’s cost estimator, if they have one, and start putting in some amounts for the keywords you want. Start with 10 cents per click. If 10 cents per click only lands you between positions 12 and 20, then you’re going to have to raise it up a bit until you fall between positions 7 and 12. Let’s for argument’s sake say it costs you 15 cents per click to get between positions 7 and 12. That means, 100 clicks is going to cost you .00. That means you have to be making at least .01 per sale or it doesn’t pay to do this.

But…

Making a penny a sale is a joke. You want to make at least 100% over the cost of the sale. So if it’s going to cost you to make 1 sale, then you need to be paid a commission of at least for that sale. If you’re not, then selling that product using pay per click is not worth it.

There you go. I have just taken the most complicated advertising system in the world and simplified it down to this.

Here are the steps.

1. Pick a product to sell.

2. Pick a pay per click search engine to use.

3. Get the keywords needed for the product.

4. Figure out how much it will cost PER CLICK to promote that product, shooting for a position of 7 through 12.

5. Figure out how much profit you will make based on 1 sale per 100 clicks.

6. If the profit is less than 100% then do NOT use pay per click to promote this product.

I just saved you about on useless pay per click books.

If you need a list of pay per click sites, here are the best ones according to their Alexa rank. There are plenty more, but they get such little traffic that it’s not worth using them. Remember though, this is the most unpredictable form of advertising on the Internet. And please understand, this is in NO way meant to be a COMPLETE tutorial on pay per click advertising. There would be no point to it. Each search engine has a help section on setting up your ads so there is no need to cover that here, especially since each one is different. Generalizing about how to word ads and what keywords to choose is also useless because these things change as well. Besides, an ad that you ran yesterday may not work today, depending on changes in the Internet environment.

Yes, you want your ads to stand out. Rich Jerk did a great job on this but now that so many people are using his “method” customers are becoming immune to his theatrics and all the copy cats he’s spawned.

So here is the best advice I can give you as far as pay per click. If you get to step 6 and the product is worth selling, come up with a good 3 line ad (that’s all you get) and test it out for 100 clicks. If it doesn’t get you 1 sale by click 200, chuck it and take the loss. You don’t want to throw good money after bad. There’s a chance that product will never sell because the sales page is garbage.

Don’t let anybody tell you it’s the ad because if they liked the ad enough to go to the site then there’s nothing wrong with it. If the ad stunk, people would have never clicked on it. There’s only so much you can do with 3 lines, so don’t get sucked into the “It’s your ad” argument. A lousy ad doesn’t get clicked on. A lousy sales page, that’s different. It won’t convert.

In today’s publishing marketplace, the success of a book depends greatly on a strong marketing plan. This article will provide you with easy, free, and cheap book marketing, promotion and publicity tips to get you headed in the right direction. You can have the best book in the world, but if no one knows about it, no one will buy it; publicity, promotion, marketing and a focus on selling more books should now be a big part of your focus every day.


Make sure you have at least one good AP style press release, which you can send out for the lifetime of your book. Press releases can generate thousands of dollars in sales when picked up by national trade or print media. When picked up by the wire services, a press release can easily end up generating hundreds of mentions for your book.


Invest in press release submitting software, or at least set aside time every week to send out a press release online to the press directories. Your book press release should not be written as you would a sales letter or flier, it should be written for the editor and tell about your book in a factual way, no opinion or glowing remarks. Mail a press release to at least 1000 print and broadcast contacts just prior to publishing your title and again and again after you publish; you can never send too many.


Don’t underestimate the value of a good press release for making book sales. Using press releases for marketing or promoting your book or book’s website has become increasingly popular as publishers discover the powerful benefits of using press releases.

Submit articles to online article directories that focus on your book’s topic to drive customers to your website. Make sure to promote and market your book each and every day, both online and offline. Contact any companies, corporations or organizations that might use your book for promotions; offer significant discounts for volume orders or for thousands of copies offer a specified amount just above book production costs.


Arrange to speak at local, regional and national events that relate to your book topic; bring books along and have an associate sell them at the back of the room for you. Be your own publicist and send a press release along with a review copy of your book to publications in your book’s genre and to book review magazines.


I’ve seen publishers lose a lot of money paying for expensive display ads, so beware if you do this; I don’t advise it in the beginning or sometimes at all — get your feet wet first so you know what you’re doing.


Local radio shows and television appearances are good but are often forgotten within hours of the broadcast; make sure to make or get a video or DVD copy of any television broadcast for future promotions. It’s important to publish a website that focuses on your title; you’ll be able to refer editors and customers and all interested parties to your book information with the click of a mouse. Create an online contest and list it in online contest directories to drive traffic to your website.


Make sure your sales letter or flier is first rate; this is the formal presentation of your title to the prospective buyer. You can give away a copy of your book in a raffle at a local function to get more book recognition. Make sure not to overlook the Internet; get yourself interviewed or profiled for sites both about writing, publishing and about the topics covered in your book.


Remember to make sure your book is listed in Books-in-Print; don’t assume it’s already there. Make at least five telephone calls a day that relate to marketing your book.


If your book solves a problem, focus on this in your marketing. Every day it’s important to focus on a wide variety of marketing approaches.
