The greatest fear among the technophobic is the inability to use a new computer, a new piece of software or a new electronic device. Faced with this challenge, the Apple iPhone flattens the learning curve considerably.

Apple’s approach has always been to create products from a user’s perspective, rather than from an engineer or a computer programmers perspective.

That approach clearly pays off for the computer industry’s powerhouse, with products like the Macintosh, the iMac, the PowerBook and the iPod under its belt.

The fact that its iPod digital music player is the dominant MP3 player in the market, with more than 90% of auctions at sites like eBay is testament to Apple’s design prowess.

One might say that the iPhone is the smartphone especially designed for people who hate to use cellphones.

The iPhone’s user interface is intuitive, giving users the ability to use most of the iPhone’s functions without reference to a user manual.

Apple which was among the pioneers of the graphical user interface in its Mac line of computers has done for the smartphone, what it has already done for the desktop, laptop and its iconic iPod digital music player.

While you might sit back and feel that the iPhone’s features are so user friendly that anyone could have done it, you might see some of the irony in that statement.

If the iPhone was so simple to use, why hadn’t one of the other major telco’s already instituted features like an intelligent keypad, computing intelligence smart enough to adjust the LCD display’s brightness in response to environmental lighting, or the disabling of the keypad when it is brought close to your face already?

While it’s competitors seem to be constantly struggling to add more features to its digital music players and computers, trying to outdo each other, this seems like an exercise in significantly upping the whizz-bang factor of its devices.

Instead Apple goes the opposite route and looks for the simplest solution to any design or technical challenge.

There is an elegance in simple solutions, and its the user friendly nature of the Apple iPod and soon the Apple iPhone which will likely bring this category of smartphones into the mass market.

Many complain that existing smartphones are perhaps a little too smart for their own good, with menus buried under more menus, and users struggling to make simple changes to their phones.

The iPhone looks set to change that trend and if it succeeds in doing so, it would have blazed yet another trail on the technology landscape.

With the announcement of Apple about its iPhone at the Macworld 2007, a whole lot of discussion started in the tech savvy world. People were eager to extract detailed information about the function and features of this new generation device. Now, shroud has been unwrapped. This lovely device is sleek in appearance with top-notch video and music features. The innovative touchscreen is easy to handle and its multi-media has relishing quality. The iPhone has a marvelous display with trim profile and no external antenna. It measures 115mm long x 61mm wide x 12mm deep. To compare, it is wide and tall like Palm Treo 750, but much thinner than the popular Motorola RAZR. Its display is of glass instead of plastic, very handy to fit our hand. The iPhone handset’s display is noteworthy; it does not only take full advantage of the large size (3.5 inches) but also translates it into superb colors, crisp graphics and smooth movements. True to Apple’s style, the iPhone’s menu is user friendly, and attractive. Series of colored images are visible in the main menu, important features like camera, calendar and setting are placed on the top and mail folder, phone menu, iPod player, and Safari Web browser sits at the bottom of the screen. Smooth animation helps in quick shift from one function to the other. Depending on one’s requirement the touchscreen quickly transforms into a keyboard, number keypad, Safari browser, and video or music player. The iPhone is gaining popularity for its multi-touch technology, this allows finger to manipulate the screen in variety of ways. If looking at a message, you can easily amplify the text by pushing and holding over a particular area. Just move the text without lifting the finger and whole text will appear in a magnified way. In the same way, zoom in and zoom out can be performed by just putting and lifting of the finger. Likewise, in the Web browser, one can scroll the Web page by just slipping the finger, or double tap for zoom. When viewing your message list and want to delete some items, just swipe the finger from left to right throughout the message. A ‘delete’ button will come out – press it. Thanks to the iPhone’s motion sensor, it automatically adjusts the handset’s display orientation when one flips it on its side while exploiting its Internet browser and video or music players. The moment one lifts the iPhone to the ear, its proximity sensor automatically switch off the display. One of the best exterior features of iPhone is its ‘hardware menu button’. The moment you push it, it takes you back to the home screen, regardless of any applications. This single button saves you from multiple menu taps, if you are sank in secondary menu. On the top of the handset is the call controlling button, just one tap will mute the ringer, or double tap to send the call to the voicemail. This top button can also be used to put your phone asleep. So, if you are looking for an expensive latest gadget, it is nice to have iPhone. After waiting for a very long time for the launch of iPhone in Australia, it is finally here for all, but we all look forward to the days of a cheap iphone.
