Self publishers need to have a good solid marketing plan to sell books and should be written well in advance of writing your book and in place a year prior to publishing your book. Make sure you know you have a market for your book before you write it. If you’ve written a ‘how to’ book you’ll find people are always seeking ‘how to’ information making your book easy to sell; in fact the most sought after items on the Internet are information products. Your book selling, book marketing, and book promotion planning should begin before the manuscript is completed.

Using press releases can be a very effective marketing tool if used properly. Make sure your press release spells out the ‘who, what, where, when, and why.’ Direct mail a press release to all the trade journals in your field over and over again, not just once; you can use the same release.

Your book press release should not be written as you would a sales letter or flier, it should be written for the editor and tell about your book in a factual way, no opinion or glowing remarks. Send out the same press release to the editor of your local daily newspaper every week until you are called for an interview or are written up. Invest in press release submitting software and set aside time every week to send out a press release online to the press directories.

Send out at least ten press releases to the print and broadcast media in your area every month. When picked up by wire services, a press release can easily end up generating hundreds of mentions for your book through syndication.

Contact non-bookstore booksellers and offer to leave books on consignment. Make five telephone calls a day that relate to marketing your book. When you get a nice write up or feature about you and/or your book, have it laminated and set it up on an easel at trade shows.

Book signings don’t sell many books for publishers and are often a waste of time; better to spend it elsewhere. Make sure to promote and market your book each and every day, both online and offline. Make sure not to overlook the Internet; get yourself interviewed or profiled for sites both about writing, publishing and about the topics covered in your book. Place free ads periodically for your book’s website on Craigslist in different categories to drive even more traffic to your website.

Local radio shows and television appearances are good but are often forgotten within hours of the broadcast; make sure to make or get a copy of any television broadcast for future promotions. I’ve seen publishers lose a lot of money paying for expensive display ads, so beware if you do this; I don’t advise it in the beginning — get your feet wet first so you know what you’re doing.

Women buy more books then men; see how you can fit your book into the women’s market. Find a non-exclusive distributor with a good reputation to carry your book for the book store trade, as well as for other retailers. Remember to make sure your book is listed in Books-in-Print; don’t assume it’s already listed.

Submit articles to online article directories that focus on your book’s topic to drive customers to your website. Arrange to speak at local, regional and national events that relate to your book topic; bring books along and have an associate sell them at the back of the room.

Build a web site that provides another avenue for ordering, a virtual online press kit and link exchanges with sites that relate to your topic. If your book solves a problem, focus on this in your marketing.

The success of any book marketing effort depends on a good book and just plain hard work; it’s been done many times before and you can do it too. You can market and promote your book on a shoestring budget; be careful about your marketing dollars.

The most common mistake people make when self publishing their books is to ignore marketing until it is too late. As an author, you want your book to be the best in its category. To make it stand out from the rest, you need to market your book carefully and there are a lot of decisions to make right at the start.

Who are you planning to sell your book to? This is the most critical question you need to answer. Before taking any steps to promote your book you should be aware of who your target audience is. ‘Everybody’ is not the correct answer to this question, although it is a common answer. The more focused you are on your target audience the easier it will be for you reach them. After identifying you target audience, you should try to gather as much data about them as you can. The next step should be to outline your goals and objectives, determine your budget and implement your strategies. From there, you can then determine what form your book should take. For example, the size and weight, number of pages, type of cover, etc.

The best selling books are not necessarily the best books so it depends on how it was promoted. It used to be a common wisdom that the only way to become a best selling author was to go through a major publishing house. However, for many years, many bestsellers have actually been self published and self promoted. When deciding whether to self publish your book or not, you should examine the advantages that successful self-publishers seem to have over their not so fortunate counterparts.

Has your book already been published? You want to make sure you are going to market with something new. So make sure to do some research before putting all your effort into selling something that has already been sold. Your title will be critical in capturing your target audience so choose it carefully. Similarly, your cover should catch your target audience’s eye. Think of what appeals to that particular demographic.

As writers have a reputation for being sensitive creatures, it should first of all be noted that those who plan to handle the marketing and publicity aspects of their book themselves should shed this image and possess thick hides. While sensitivity is great while writing your book, you have to alter your approach and become practical when it comes to marketing it. You should not take any negatives situations that arise personally and should feel as if all the setbacks are taking you closer to your end goal.

In this age of internet a book that is promoted through the web gains an added advantage over those which are not. Thus, to promote your book online, you should first of all have an exclusive website for it. Here you should display your book’s cover, excerpts, reviews and testimonials on the home page and provide links to distributors that carry your book. Another way to get your book noticed is by including it in a books in print database. Several online bookstores use this database. If you are not building a website for your book then you can use an email promotion campaign for promoting it. First of all, you should send a newsletter to your different email contacts. Inform them about your book and then follow up with a sales letter.

Another way to promote your book online is by creating your own blog. Having a blog has now become one of the most profitable things on the web. On your blog you can add the link to your site and depending on the popularity of your blog it can receive more than one hundred thousand hits a day.

Price is a major consideration in marketing your book. Be aware of your target audience’s typical disposable income level. This can make or break successful promotion of your book.

These are some basic tips on how to start thinking about marketing your book. This is an ongoing process and will require constant re-evaluation. Become aware of what works for other authors and incorporate ideas when they make sense. Above all, have fun marketing your book!

The long standing question in book publishing is how would a publishing house survive and continue printing alternative materials without a decent profit-margin? Realistically, some Christian book publishers do not sell enough books to even compensate the cost of production. Then again, a down trend in selling your books must fuel an inquiry on the different aspects of your publishing business such as the content of the books, the marketing of such books, and if the advertising strategies really reach the target market.

For publishers who want to make more money in order to print more spiritually enhancing and motivating books, read this list of little known book publishing secrets.

1. Create memorable content or your books and use this to market your book

All best-selling books have magic in their pages. Even the simplest books with only black ink and minimalist book cover designs could spark magic with the words in between pages. Always remember that a good book is never enough. It must be good enough for a person to read it over and over again and still feel satisfied every time. Emphasize this distinctive feature of the books your company publishes.

2. Check on your advertising scheme

As said earlier, a book with low readership is a cue to check on marketing and advertising schemes. Probably, people never read enough announcements about the book. Is it present in Christian bookstores? Does the commercial bookstore carry it in their religious books corner? If not, then have the publishers tried to negotiate with the bookstore? If you do not believe in the traditional way of marketing and advertising, then turn to social media. The internet is a medium which can be used to promote your products for free.

3. Create a subscription for your books

Subscription services often offer cheaper rates compared to regular priced printed materials. While this marketing strategy is common among regularly produced printed materials such as magazines (monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly), it is unlikely to find books that offer subscription rates. If your company publishes at least four books in a year, try offering subscription to your loyal readers and then show them how much they could save in a year. You can either do this or give the subscribers a free gift every year for the continuous subscription.

4. Try Multi-Level Marketing

Multi level marketing is the same with network marketing wherein people recruit other people to sell your products. It is a very effective way of selling books and other religious items because your customers will most likely be those of the same faith as you are. Therefore, Christians will be able to network with co-Christians and thus have a market for the printed materials that your publishing house offers.

These are just some of things that can be done in order to increase the marketability of Christian book and other related products. Combined with other marketing strategies and a very good book to sell, this will surely spell profits for the publishing house.

Some Classics

A Wrinkle in Time – (Newberry Medal Winner) This is simply a beautiful book that has blazed a trail in modern children’s fantasy by putting forward a story of several children embarking on a grand adventure; In this case to rescue their father. There is some fascinating and thoughtful stuff in this book like living stars and tesseracts. It is a perennial favorite and on every librarian’s list.

A Wizard of Earthsea – Written by Ursula K. Leguin this is the first book in a series called The EarthSea series. Short and light but extraordinarily beautiful. This first book in the series follows a young boy named Ged as he goes from being a simple goat herd to a powerful wizard. It is simply beautiful and it brings forth some wonderful and magical themes such as the concept that everything (including dragons) has a secret name. And if you know the secret name you can control the thing (including dragons).

The Hobbit – This probably shouldn’t be on this list but it is so good that I can’t leave it off. With the absolute enormous success of the Lord of the Rings movies this book may be overlooked but I consider it better! It is also in the works to be a movie.

Five Children and it – This is one of the most popular books written by Edith Nesbit who is often credited with creating the whole genre of children embarking on fantasy adventures. Her books are in the public domain now and can easily be found for free. The theme of this book is: Be careful what you ask for. You may get it! That’s the message in this delightful tale of five youngsters who discover a bizarre sand creature that grants wishes. There’s a catch, of course: the wishes come undone at sunset, and worse yet, things often get out of hand!

Dragonflight – This book is a little more complex than earlier ones I have cited here and it tends toward being more of a novel for grownups but it very suitable for teens. We are introduced to a complex world of dragons through the main character Lessa. This book is often credited with being the book that has launched many a young girls writing career. It is the first book in a trilogy of books called The Dragon riders of Pern series.

A Princess of Mars: The first novel in the Edgar Rice Burroughs series and currently in the initial stages of being written into a movie or animation that will be made by Pixar. This is the first book in a series called John Carter of Mars and it is good rollicking fun in the tradition of the old pulp magazines. It is a favorite for young boys who like sword fighting big monsters.

Contemporary fantasy and fiction

When it comes to modern fantasy fiction for teens there is an enormous selection to choose from and that, in itself, could be an obstacle. Here are summaries of some of the more popular ones and I have also picked some that are currently slated to be made into a movie.

Artemis Fowl Series – This series of books takes a little bit of an unusual position as far as children’s books go because Artemis Fowl himself is a twelve year old genius and a criminal mastermind. The author of these books calls them Die Hard with Fairies! And the books are often characterized as being a high-octane and rip-roaring ride. It is a wildly popular series of books with a big website and even a wiki. There are currently five books in the series with the first being simply titled Artemis Fowl. The sixth book “The Time Paradox” is set to be released in July of 2008.

Here, there be Dragons – The title itself is rather mysterious and harkens back to another time. This was the phrase that cartographers used to write in patches of ocean that were unexplored. The basic premise of this story will really resonate with teens that are fans of fantasy itself because it starts with the unusual meeting of three young strangers John, Jack, and Charles on a rainy night in London. We later find out these three young men are J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Charles Williams.

The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches – This is a series of books that takes place in a world of magic and secrets called Ruin Mist. This book was slow to start but word of mouth turned it into a best seller. It is one of those relatively little known books and series that is very satisfying.

Septimus Heap – If magic and wizards are of strong appeal this series of books make a great alternative to Harry Potter. The Main character (Septimus) is the seventh son of a seventh son and the main line of the story follows two children switched at birth: a boy destined to be a wizard and a girl destined to be a princess. There are currently four books in the series and the first book has been picked up by Warner Brothers and is currently being made into a movie that is scheduled for release in 2010.

Any of these books or series will launch teens and young adults on a remarkable adventure into strange fantasy worlds and no joystick or keyboard is required.

Taking care of books isn’t a simple process. Not only do you need to keep books organized, but you also want to keep them accessible and undamaged for as long as possible. Whether you are interested in starting a book store or you are working in a library, it will help to enlist the services of a book organizer to allow you to feel confident in the integrity of the books you are utilizing. Here are some things to look for in a book organizer. When you hire the right person or purchase the best software, you will feel confident in your books and their ability to help and to educate others.

Look at That Resume

While not everyone may have had experience as a book organizer, you do want to look for people who have had experience organizing other things at other jobs they may have held. For example, you might want to look for people who have had to maintain a filing system at an office or for someone who has catalogued addresses in a spreadsheet. These skills will let you know that the person is able to manage a system that you might already have in place – and that they are able to be and to stay organized over the long term. If there is no relevant experience, you might want to ask how they would organize a large collection of books – and see how they handle that question.

Introduce the Person to Your Collection

During the course of an interview or a training session, see if your prospective book organizer is able to see how you want things done. Talk them through your current organization methods to see if they can appreciate what you are doing. If they are able to recognize what you need and they are able to begin to organize things on their own with you watching over their shoulder, chances are good they will be able to take on the job you need them to do. While your new person might not understand the process instantly, they should also not be completely clueless or intimidated by what you are asking them to do.

What about Electronic Organizers?

A book organizer doesn’t have to be a person either. There are a number of high quality book organizer software programs now available. By cataloging the books you have, the software will do the rest – organize the titles, let you keep notes on each title, etc. These organizers can be adapted and updated to suit your needs, no matter how big or small your book collection might be. You can also then share your inventory with other locations or you can move the collection inventory from one computer to the next if you find you need to do so.

When you add a book organizer to your company or to your organization, you will be able to focus on other things besides using up your energy looking for things which should be simple to find. Getting organized today will help you stay productive long into the future.

Whenever you buy a bodybuilding book, you should make sure that the author is popular and respected in body building world.
