Family: Of Utmost Importance

“When I no longer got everything I wanted, I learned the importance of my family, my wife, my friends.  I always deeply appreciated them, but I came to realize that without them I’m really nothing, and to what degree that’s true,” Glen Phillips, singer and songwriter.

The latest and greatest technological thingamajig can seem to be the only thing on children’s minds sometimes, particularly on a holiday or birthday. On Christmas day, it may be near impossible to get a child away from his new electronic device in order to be with his family.  Some adults can portray this same attitude when they spend countless extra hours at work and never arrive home for family dinner.  How can the importance of family be instilled?  Who can instill that lesson most adequately?  Can the youngest generation realize the simple fact people are more important than things or even reputation?

Paolo Tiberi’s book Chronicles of King Argoz, Prince Ultan and Princess Maya tells an enchanting tale of a family’s love and concern for one another in the midst of poverty.  In The King and the Thief, a man is forced into thievery by a King’s unjust taxation.  His thievery is to feed and care for his family, of whom the smallest member is sick.  His family lives in a substandard home that lacks the necessities.  His youngest child is sick and in order to pay a doctor, he must steal to sell for money.  And yet when the King visits his home (in disguise), he sees something that stops him in his tracks.

“The family before him showed love and compassion.  Yet, they had nothing beautiful around them.”

Probably one of the most effective ways a teacher or parent can teach the concept of the importance of family and other relationships is in the way they themselves treat one another.  If value is placed on individuals and not on the schedule or jobs or stuff, children will intuitively pick up on what is the most important.  In a school, how many stories and lessons value people and relationships and how many value money, jobs, or belongings?

There are numerous ideas to put children into action, to help them show their appreciation to family members and peers.  Crafting homemade cards for any of numerous holidays is an excellent idea.  Making “I like you because…” lists are popular with the upper elementary students.  Choosing Students of the Week and highlighting their likes and dislikes, etc. is another way to place value on people.

So many kids are emotionally crushed in school because another is trying to save face or is trying to push the blame for something onto someone else to make themselves look better, or to keep they’re “coolness,” or some other devaluing activity.  When parents and educators are proactive in teaching the value of individuals, relationships, and families, the fight to overcome such behavior is being waged successfully.  When proactive teaching is available, families are placed in priority and the world will see the difference in how we treat one another and how that branches out into the community.

Accepting the Wrong Council

Sylvie Barak peeks into the world of Bug Labs at CES 2011. In most tech contexts, the word ‘bug’ is not a good thing, but a small East Coast startup by the name of Bug Labs is changing the whole connotation of the word, teaming up with big carriers like Verizon Wireless to help developers eliminate the notable barriers to innovating in hardware. What Bug Labs offers is an award-winning open hardware development platform to help developers kickstart their projects to produce innovative new electronic devices quickly and cheaply, from open source hardware designs and software, to partnerships in areas like supply chain and manufacturing. The firm is proud to show off its network ready 3G wireless module plug-and-play electronic tool kit, which it is getting into developers’ hands through its partnerships, not only with Verizon, but also with AT&T and Sprint. “The bigger story of major US carriers aligning behind a scrappy open source startup from Soho is coming together!” Bug’s business development manager Ed Borden told Unplugged. Indeed, it certainly seems that way.
