Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora disguised his dislike for Mexico’s native people by writing religious works. Wishing to be known for his good rather than is “typical of his social class’ beliefs”, he wrote one of Mexico’s most famous religious works, the Ode to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Writing other literary pieces, Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora also penned a book based on pre-Columbian life.
Transition to print media for the masses began in 1537. Once only for the wealthy, printing presses were able to publish multiple copies of books, newspapers and other literary items. Because these works were sold at less expensive prices, more and more of Mexico’s citizens became literate. Due to censorship, most books printed were of a religious nature and were available in at least 10 different languages intended for natives as well as European settlers. During the printing press’ most active period (Colonial Period), thousands of books were printed; each undergoing a censored review before distribution. Sor Juana Ine de la Cruz and Carlos de Siguenza y Gongora were two of the most famous authors during this enlightened time.
A rarity, Sor Juana Ine de la Cruz was an aspiring female poet who became a published author. In order to advance herself as an author and vocalist for women’s rights, de la Cruz became a nun. Convents were safe havens for intellectual pursuits and she wrote various works devoted to female causes. In addition, she also wrote in languages readable by Mexico’s indigenous people and African slaves.
