Watching Internet Tv – Beginning of a New Era?

Internet TV is the new kid on the block. After the popularity of youtube.com & other video hosting websites such as metacafe.com, watching Internet TV is fast catching up. As outlined in my previous article http://www.squidoo.com/watchtvontheinternet experts say that it is only a matter of time before people start using the Internet as a primary means of watching TV. With the battle of the behemoths cable TV & Satellite TV raging in full force, it looks like the winner is something that no one expected, ie Internet TV. Watching Internet TV is the new craze & since the Internet is such a huge market, there is always going to be room for technological advances & other forms of the same product.

What are the main features of Internet TV sites that has caused this sudden surge in interest? There are 3 reasons why this could be happening.

1. Simplicity & accessibility – One thing that struck me & many other online TV watchers was the simplicity of the setting up process & the ease with which you can install all necessary resources. Cable TV has always had problems with the network & Satellite TV eliminated that problem by providing free-to-air broadcasts from reputed TV channel providers. The other demerits that existed in both Satellite TV & Cable TV were eliminated by people being able to watch internet TV with the help of some reputed Internet TV sites.

2. Quality of TV channels – If you ask people who have watched Internet TV before, they will tell you about how they were staggered at the sheer number of channels that they could get. However, my experiences with life have taught me that for most of the things, it is the quality & not the quantity that matters. Cable TV as we all know, has been failing in this department. Satellite TV is much better in this area & better still is watching Internet TV on your PC. They not only stream good quality content but also have a huge database of channels. This is also helpful for someone who keeps traveling. Businessmen can catch up on the latest stock updates on their laptops. Kids can have access to channels like Cartoon Network. Moms can keep up with their cooking recipes & not miss their soaps. Each professional can gain from this & all that is required is a computer, be it a PC or a laptop with an internet connection.

3. Price – A major distinguishing factor between Cable TV, Satellite TV & Watching Internet TV is the price. Cable TV offers its services at a monthly price that seems to be ever-increasing. Satellite TV charge a big one-time fee & offer their services for a minimal monthly fees. Watching TV online turns out to be a cheaper option since there is just a one-time fee & after that, no monthly fees or maintenance fees whatsoever are imbibed on you.

The above factors could be the reason for many people to switch to internet TV. You probably may not want to miss out on this.

I’m the author (but I couldn’t find the author review form here at Amazon). The book was the first to describe Internet videoconferencing, the first to detail how to set up Macintosh and Windows CU-SeeMe clients and broadcast reflectors, and a lot of cultural context. (1995 was a heady year on the bleeding edge; much was going on and everything seemed possible.)See MTV VJ Adam Curry, Borre Ludvigsen, Yvonne Marie Andres, and others pioneer the new medium.Mostly of historical interest. I like the writing style :-) How many books use Escalon, California, to describe TCP/IP networking? The book is currently out of print. Amazon has used copies, and you may see the text online with a bit of searching.
