Have you always wanted to be a doctor? What about a lawyer or a writer? Whether you are 15 and deciding on your career so that you can plan for college or middle-aged and looking to change careers, the best way to find out if you will like your choice is to shadow someone in the profession. Well, if you can’t do that, why not observe? Good news. You can do that right from home, if you have satellite TV.

That’s right. Thanks to the hundreds of channels that satellite provides, you can check out a variety of careers. Let’s go over a few examples. A channel that’s been pushing people into medical careers for years, due to its large amount of non-fiction, real-life programming, is Discovery Health. You can watch real surgeries or follow actual nurses around as they go about their jobs. You can even get a head start on your career by picking up some of the terminology or by watching a special on the nervous system.

Another great channel offered by satellite TV is the Military Channel. It’s exactly like it sounds. You can see plans for the construction of future weapons, watch battles and take a look at how certain soldiers train. You can also learn about past wars and battles, and how they were fought. If your goal is to join the military, this channel will give you an in-depth inside look at what you are getting yourself into.

The Biography Channel isn’t specifically geared to one career path, obviously. However, if you know that you would like to be a music mogul, check out the biography of Russell Simmons. Want to be an actor? You’ve got a hundred episodes to choose from, from Alec Baldwin to Harrison Ford. How about being president one day? Mr. Obama’s tale is told, too. Lastly, for the striving gold diggers, there is the Anna Nicole Smith biography. All jokes aside, satellite TV allows you to check out The Biography Channel and learn some keys to success along the way.

Sure, everyone carves their own way in this world and copying someone else won’t get you but so far. On the other hand, trying to follow in someone’s footsteps is a different matter. Oprah paved the way for Tyra Banks and Wendy Williams. Johnny Carson blazed the trail for Leno and Letterman. Everyone has a mentor or idol at some point that helps to mold his or her career. Even if your goal isn’t to be famous, there’re always some pointers to be picked up from the uber-successful.

With the hundreds of channels offered by satellite TV, you can’t even discount fiction. Do you know that there are hundreds of doctors across the U.S. that admit to having been inspired to pursue medicine after having watched E.R.? It’s true. Who knows where you will find your inspiration when you are flipping through all those channels. You may even head on down to the XM radio channels and discover that you want to be a deejay. You never know.
